Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need previous firefighting experience?
No! We welcome volunteers with no prior experience. We provide all necessary training to ensure you're fully prepared for firefighting and emergency response duties.
How much time do I need to commit?
We're flexible with schedules. Most volunteers attend monthly training meetings and respond to calls when available. The more you can participate, the more beneficial it is for the community.
What are the physical requirements?
Volunteers must pass a basic medical examination to ensure they can safely perform firefighting duties. We'll work with you on physical fitness and provide training to help you meet requirements.
What are the age requirements?
Minimum age is 16 years old. Ages 16-17 join as junior members with restrictions on duties and hours. Youth Academy (ages 12-15) and Explorer Post (ages 14-21) provide pathways for younger teens. There's no upper age limit - we have active volunteers in their 60s and 70s.
What can junior members (ages 16-17) do?
Junior members receive training in fire safety and basic response, participate in community events, and assist with non-hazardous duties. They have restrictions on interior firefighting and nighttime activities per New York State regulations. Parental permission and school performance requirements apply.
How do I get my teen involved?
Teens age 16+ can apply for junior membership. Ages 12-15 can join our Youth Academy for fire safety education and community service. Ages 14-21 can participate in our Explorer Post for advanced training and career exploration in fire service.
